Oriental Circlet TiaraThe Oriental Circlet Tiara—also known as the Indian Circlet—was commissioned by Prince Albert for his wife, Queen Victoria. Crafted by Garrard & Co. in 1853, the piece originally featured opals and approximately 2,600 diamonds. Its design, inspired by the East India Company jewels displayed at the Great Exhibition of 1851, showcased a distinctive “Indian” aesthetic with Mughal arches and lotus motifs. The tiara was altered in 1858, but Queen Victoria never wore it again after Prince Albert’s death. When it passed to Queen Alexandra in 1901, she replaced the opals with rubies and modified the arches for improved wearability. |
