The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the Diplomatic Reception this evening.
Hosted by The Queen at Buckingham Palace, the annual white-tie soirée is one of the most formal events on the royal calendar. Over 1,000 people from around 130 countries, including members of the British government and past Prime Ministers attend the gathering. Kate looked every inch the princess in a new Alexander McQueen gown. The custom velvet dress appears to be based on the designer's ready-to-wear Bejeweled Long Sleeve Illusion Gown (US$7,290) featuring the same curved v-neckline and peaked shoulders. Kate's gown does not have the lace insets or the bejeweled back. The Duchess donned her 'go-to' diadem - the Queen Mary Lover's Knot tiara. In addition to the tiara, Kate also loaned The Queen's Nizam of Hyderabad necklace. We first saw her wear the piece to the 2014 Portrait Gala. Kate also accessorized with 'new' diamond chandelier earrings and a matching marquis cluster ring.
The jewels belong to Her Majesty and are part of the Diamond Chandelier Drop Demi-Parure. Below we see the earrings and ring worn by the Queen during a State Visit to Germany in 1992. Their provenance is unknown.
Pinned to Kate's dress was a Royal Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II which she was awarded in 2017 and first seen on the Duchess at the Netherlands state banquet in 2018. Kate was also decorated with the Royal Victorian Order sash and badge. You may recall The Duchess of Cambridge was appointed Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order on her eighth wedding anniversary this April as recognition of her service to the Sovereign. Kate first wore the order to the United States state banquet in June.

I am not usually a fan of seeing the badges, sashs, and the royal family order together with the jewels, but Catherine nailed it. The simplicity of the dress (which I love) made it all work together. She looks wonderful, very regal but still approachable.

The Duchess looks lovely the idea was there, but this gown is a rare miss for me. Navy can be a tricky colour to wear, can be seen as black, this is heavy looking. So dark, combined with the shading of makeup, her hairstyle, looks severe. Overall appearance is somewhat matronly and aging. The jewellery is very dense looking, necklace and neckline don't go together, a more refined jewel piece would have suited. Pearl tiara with diamond earrings, diamond necklace out of place, either one or the other. A diamond tiara would have looked sensational, I would love to see her in a different choice of tiara. 2018 gown was superb, jewels pieces were spot on. More age appropriate and light.

Kate looks fabulous. The black dress is the perfect foil for the sumptuous diamonds.

I think that Kate reviewed many style gowns from Kate's go to Designers and the Alexander McQueen gown was the one that had the neckline to wear that beautiful necklace, ribbons, brooch etc. You can see from the original gown, they change the panels & material. The designer without a doubt had the measurements of the necklace and where it falls and ends, so it fits perfectly. I now can see some of the back, they made the back a little lower so that when you see the front of the gown , it gives an illusion that it might be a low back skillfully done and the shoulder pads give the dress more structure to display all the items Kate is wearing from jewelry and on. This same event previously she wore diamond bracelets. With this dress she wore instead a cocktail ring with the beautiful midnight blue velvet long sleeves that show off the ring and ear rings beautifully. This gown flows and fit her perfectly even in length, I think she had at least one fitting this time with the shoes she was going to wear. My feeling we are going to see a pair of midnight navy velvet pumps with another outfit some day. 💙. Also the Queen looked fabulous with emeralds & diamonds dripping 👑.
